Breakdown: PHI Azkals vs NEP Tigers

Azkals (FIFA Ranked 166) scored four goals while not allowing one against the Himalayan Tigers (FIFA Ranked 135) last night during their international friendly match in Rizal Memorial Stadium.

So far, that was the best performance (I'd seen) from the Azkals. Their short passes were good, and they didn't really rely on long passes in which in the past years, were the sole core of their attack. Tigers were trying so hard to keep the ball on their possession but superb Azkals defense was not letting them create an opening. Neil Etheridge's white jersey barely touched the pitch ground. The difference in shots and shots in targets proves it.

The best player of the match for me was Paul Mulders. Dennis Cagara was also good. They were really trying to keep the forwards do their jobs. The first goal was the product of Mulders' ability to dribble the ball and attract defenders, making Phil Younghusband open for a clearance. SCORE: PHI 1-0 NEP.

The second goal is my goal of the night. James Younghusband, who was also playing good during the match, faked the defenders with his weak foot, toss the ball away on the right, and followed it up with a powerful kick making the Tigers' goalie dived for a failed save. SCORE: PHI 2-0 NEP.

The third goal gave Phil his second goal of the match. After a good corner kick from Chiefy Caligdong, Tigers defense headed the ball away from their penalty box, sending it to an Azkal for a kick which hit Phil for a follow up. This gave the Azkals the breather they need to play with ease, and relax a little bit. SCORE: PHI 3-0 NEP.

Tigers were trying so hard to score a consolation goal. A nice attempt from their forwards was saved by Neil, making it the only threat for the Azkals goalie. Just before the injury time, Cagara created an opening from an excellent long-pass from Azkals midfield, pass it to Phil who was at the moment in search of his hat-trick. Tigers defense kept its eyes on Phil, making him pass the ball to the rushing Matt Hartmann for the long goal. SCORE: PHI 4-0 NEP.

If Azkals will continue to play quality football like they did last night, there's no doubt they can beat higher ranked national football teams. They just have to play with composure, play good defense and train good plays and cohesion.

Futbol Pilipinas forever! Azkals, win or lose!!

Anyway, my fave player on their team is Chiefy and James +)
